Steeplechasing began in County Cork in 1752, when Edmond Blake bet Cornelius O'Callaghan a cask of wine that his hunter could beat the other's over a line of country nearly five miles away. Anne Holland's book celebrates the great moments of the sport's 250 year history by portraying steeplechasing's story thematically. She draws portraits of the sport's progress during the 19th Century which saw, in 1939, the first running of the Grand National and brings evocative memories of steeplechasing and those characters who participated in it in the 20th Century with the 2001 Grand National which took place on the 8th April. Anecdotes, surprises, occasional contention and heart-warming memories, this lavishly illustrated book is a must for any steeplechasing fan.
Anne Holland is herself a former amateur rider who was one of the first women to ride (and win) under National Hunt Rules. She is the author of numerous books on horses including 'The Grand National - The Official Celebration of 150 Years' (1988) and 'Stride by Stride - The Illustrated Story of Horseracing' (1989). She lives in Wiltshire, where she enjoys hunting on her horse, Bradbury Star. Order your copy on line now
